Ever since its foundation in 1986, Tokyo University of Technology has set practical education as one of its guiding principles to offer an environment for diverse learning and technical research. Today it has evolved into a full-fledged university, spanning the two Hachioji and Kamata campuses, with five schools, a graduate school, and research laboratories.

April 2015 will see the opening of a new School of Engineering (to be established April 2015) that incorporates "sustainable engineering," which pursues the concept of a sustainably developing society.In addition, the School of Design has added a new Industrial Design Major to further expand the institution's educational breadth, so as to nurture individuals who promise to be at the forefront of innovation in their fields.
