Research content
In recent years, there has been a lot of research and development of Mars rovers for flight exploration on Mars, as well as Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) for industrial applications. Due to the lower atmospheric density on Mars compared to Earth, and the smaller size of MAVs compared to Airplane, these flights are in the low Reynolds number region, requiring designs that take into account highly non-linear aerodynamic characteristics. We aim to comprehensively elucidate the flight mechanisms of flying animals with flapping wings such as insects and birds, which have enjoyed aerial life in such environments since ancient times, using various techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis, three-dimensional reconstruction of wing kinematics with several high-speed cameras and flow visualizations with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method. In addition, in order to utilize the aerodynamic characteristics found in the various micro-structures of flying animals, bio-inspired structures are applied to fluid machinery with rotating blades, such as propellers, wind turbines and fans, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing noise. Through these research findings, our aim is to develop technologies that can contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
