Research content
We are analyzing salt and high temperature tolerance mechanisms in plants, including wild turf grasses, and aiming to utilize the mechanisms for breeding stress tolerant crops. We have characterized distinct potassium transporters from salt tolerant wild turf grasses which play important roles in the salt tolerance. We are engaged in the development of technology to develop plants that do not require fertilizer by increasing the ability of plants to absorb phosphate and potassium. We have revealed that tissue specificity of the transporter gene expression is crucial for their high-performance activity. We are also improving formaldehyde-detoxifying ability in plants by enhancing the genes for the formaldehyde metabolism pathway.
